Yidaki Masterclasses

Djalu Gurruwiwi and his family invite you to the Yidaki Masterclass at their homeland, Gikal in North- East Arnhem Land, a small settlement on a tropical beach overlooking the Arafura Sea.

This is an intensive and intimate program where you will learn about the cultural foundations and significance of the yidaki (didgeridoo) and the art of yidaki making and playing while immersed in a Yolngu cultural experience in one of the remotest and most beautiful parts of Australia. Djalu, leader and elder of the Galpu clan, shares the secrets that have earned him a reputation as the world's foremost yidaki craftsman and player, as he guides you in the art of yidaki craftsmanship.

You will make your own yidaki and receive expert tuition in how to bring it to life. As a guest of Djalu and his family, you will experience traditional Yolngu life and interact with Yolngu people who will generously share their ancient knowledge, language, traditions and culture.

This is a rare opportunity to learn from an exceptional craftsman who has an almost cult- like following amongst musicians, yidaki collectors and enthusiasts around the world.

Your stay with Djalu and his family won't follow a strict itinerary, as people are encouraged to enjoy the experiences as they unfold, however, over your five-day stay, you will cut and craft your own yidaki, receive tuition with Djalu on your newly crafted yidaki, and enjoy bush tucker, cultural interaction and new experiences.
